Over 1,000 People’s Action Members and Allies Gather to Build Power and Transform Democracy

ARLINGTON, Va.–People’s Action’s hosted “Coming Home: An Organizing Revival,” its biennial convention, bringing together over 1,000 members and allies from across the country. People’s Action’s convention is a cherished, 50-year tradition in which members and allies strategize and build power through a series of workshops, trainings, direct actions, and meetings with Members of Congress. This year’s theme was a homecoming, representing the organization as a political home for millions. The event served as the national launch of People’s Action’s Organizing Revival.

“People’s Action’s convention is a space for people to experience the joy, inspiration, and power of collective action,” People’s Action Executive Director Sulma Arias said. “Our goal is simple: make sure every single participant leaves feeling empowered and determined to wield their power to strengthen their communities. The success of the Organizing Revival, and our ultimate goal to build a multiracial, working class democracy, depends on this.”

The Organizing Revival is People’s Action’s commitment and plan to expand the craft of organizing by training tens of thousands of new organizers and volunteers in rural, suburban, and urban communities in the craft of community organizing. The Organizing Revival’s pillars include:

  • Building new organizing infrastructure across the People’s Action network and with allies across the country;
  • Running issue and electoral campaigns that grow the network’s base of grassroots leaders and supporters; and
  • Public storytelling and strategic narratives that connect to organizing to base-build and shift what’s possible.

“The Organizing Revival is People’s Action’s call to recenter ourselves in the transformational power of organizing. It is also an invitation to the broader progressive movement to build power together. While we face great challenges, we are also in a time of incredible possibilities to organize millions of people into a vision of hope,” People’s Action Executive Director Sulma Aria said. “Our network understands what can be possible when we invest in people and each other.”

The convention’s tradition of direct actions took on corporate profiteering harming the climate, federal tenant protections from corporate landlords, claims denials by private health insurers, and the misguided war on drugs and overdose crisis.

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 40 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, we completed a national forum series that The Nation called “the most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.”
