WASHINGTON – Grassroots leaders are driving the Medicare for All movement. People’s Action released these statements today on the House Ways & Means committee hearing on health care proposals, including the Medicare for All Act of 2019:

Kristy Fogle, emergency medicine physician assistant and founder of Maryland Progressive Healthcare Coalition:

“Americans consistently put health care costs at the top of the list of issues they want Congress to address. Today’s hearing affirmed that Medicare for All is not just the strongest policy proposal on the table: it’s the only bill that would actually fix our broken health care system. As an emergency room medical care provider, I have watched for-profit health insurance corporations fail patients over and over again.”

Connie Huynh, health care campaign director, People’s Action:

“It’s no accident that Medicare for All is at the core of the third House committee hearing in three months. The on-the-ground movement is powerful and the momentum is building. Grassroots pressure from the people is the reason why the hearings are being held. Congress has no choice but to create a room for the will of the people to be heard.”

Last weekend, 40 People’s Action members in Chicago disrupted the American Medical Association’s conference there with a die-in. Here are the details and video of the action.

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 40 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, we completed a national forum series that The Nation called “the most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.”
