Champion for the Multiracial Working Class, López Faces Right-Wing Extremist Rubén Díaz Sr.

WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today endorsed Samelys López in her race to represent New York’s 15th Congressional District ahead of the June 23 New York Democratic primary election. López is running a movement politics, people-powered campaign and will fight for the People’s Action People’s Platform once elected. Citizen Action of New York, a People’s Action New York member organization, also endorsed her. López will face off against Rubén Díaz Sr., an anti-LGBTQ, anti-choice, right-wing extremist, among others, in the Democratic primary.

“Corporations and the wealthy have bullied New Yorkers for too long, and we need leaders who will fight for our communities and put people and the planet first,” said People’s Action Director of Movement Politics Ryan Greenwood  “That’s why we are proud to endorse Samelys López in her race to represent NY-15. She supports our Homes Guarantee and believes that everyone deserves a safe place to live. In this time of unprecedented mobilization for racial and economic justice, we need people like Samelys Lopez who will be champions for our movement and have the life experience of the multiracial working class.”

Samelys López – New York’s 15th Congressional District

Samelys López is a community organizer who fights for affordable housing and helps grassroots groups turn their activism into electoral power. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the South Bronx, she has helped build an independent, community-led, grassroots political movement in the Bronx by co-founding Local Democrats of NY and being an active member and co-founding Bronx Progressives.

“I am proud to receive the People’s Action endorsement,” López said. “Together, we will work to bring our working class movement from the streets of the Bronx to the halls of Congress in D.C. After growing up in the NYC shelter system, I’ve dedicated my life to fighting housing insecurity and confronting the social injustices oppressing my neighbors in the Bronx. It’s the honor of my life to run as the Homes Guarantee candidate in this race. Alongside People’s Action, we will build a multiracial working-class coalition that centers the lives and power of the most marginalized in our society.”

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 40 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing a candidate for president, we completed a national forum series that included Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro, and Andrew Yang. The Nation called our Iowa forum the “most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.
