WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today praised Sen. Bernie Sanders’ newly released principles for the next economic rescue bill.
“We are in the biggest economic and public health crises of the century,” People’s Action Director George Goehl said. “Senator Sanders’ economic rescue principles speak to the bold, fast action needed to protect and support people, and prevent corporations from consolidating economic and political power amidst a crisis.”
“We endorsed Bernie because he stands with everyday people,” Goehl continued. “This framework validates our members’ support for him prior to the pandemic and economic meltdown and rises to the occasion of this disaster.”
Sanders’ new framework prioritizes providing immediate relief to frontline workers and those facing unemployment, addressing the health insurance crisis, getting aid to states and cities, fully utilizing the Defense Production Act, and getting nutrition assistance to hungry and food-insecure people.
People’s Action noted that Sanders endorses their Homes Guarantee plan to ensure everyone has a safe, accessible, sustainable, permanently affordable home. They urged him to think even bigger when responding to the severe housing implications of the crisis.
“Senator Sanders embraced the most expansive housing plan of any presidential candidate in the 2020 cycle,” Goehl added. “We urge him to bring that same perspective to this moment and support our Rent Zero policy: no rent or mortgage payments during the crisis, no late fees, and no debts from housing obligations during the crisis. ”
