Seven years ago, on March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, bringing health care to 22 million people, many who never had health insurance before and helped 134 million people with pre-existing conditions get health coverage.

LeeAnn Hall is co-director of People’s Action. Hall serves on the executive committee of Health Care for America Now (HCAN). She is national a leader in organizing communities throughout the country on health care issues.

On the anniversary of the ACA, Hall gave this statement:

“The Affordable Care Act has been embattled and sabotaged since before it became law, by Republicans who put the profits of drug corporations and insurance companies ahead of the lives of everyday people.

“On the anniversary of the ACA becoming law, President Trump is pushing repeal and threatening those who don’t follow his dictate. This is despite hundreds of thousands of people who have taken to the streets in protest, signed petitions, written to their members of Congress and shared their personal stories publicly.

“No matter what the Republicans try to do to take away our health care, they will never be able to erase the Affordable Care Act’s most important accomplishment – significant recognition of the idea that all people should have quality, affordable health care.”

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 40 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, we completed a national forum series that The Nation called “the most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.”
