WASHINGTON, D.C.—People’s Action today announced its endorsement of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar for reelection to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. Omar is running a movement politics, people-powered campaign and will work to advance the People’s Action People’s Platform once elected. She is also endorsed by People’s Action member organization TakeAction Minnesota.

“Representative Omar has never stopped fighting for a government that works for all of us,” People’s Action Director of Movement Politics Brooke Adams said. “She’s shared our struggle and knows that when the multiracial working class governs, everyone is better off. We’re proud to endorse her again and continue organizing alongside her.”

“In Minnesota, we know a more just and equitable world is possible when we organize. I ran for Congress to advance a bold progressive agenda that puts people and our planet first—I’m running for re-election to keep fighting for that agenda. I’m proud to have the endorsement of People’s Action. When we organize together, we all win,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) said.

“Congresswoman Omar is a bold leader on the most pressing issues of our time from climate action to Medicare for All and the Homes for All Act. In Congress, she consistently fights for working families and a livable climate. She’s a progressive leader our country needs and remains deeply connected to her district. TakeAction Minnesota is proud to endorse Congresswoman Omar and ready to send her back to Congress,” TakeAction Minnesota Public Affairs Director Kenza Hadj-Moussa said.

Ilhan Omar is a former state representative and the first Black Muslim woman elected to Congress, representing Minnesota’s 5th district. She was born in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, the youngest of seven children. Her family fled the country during the Somali Civil War and took sanctuary in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years. At age 12, she and her family moved to America in search of justice and democracy. In 2012, Omar organized for the Vote No Twice campaigns to make love the law of the land and defeat a voter suppression initiative. In 2016, she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives and increased turnout in Minneapolis and across the state. In 2018, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

People’s Action’s Movement Politics program recruits, runs, and elects progressives into local and statewide offices across the country. Since 2016, People’s Action has helped elect over 380 movement politics candidates. The program focuses on electing women, people of color, and low-income people who are grounded in progressive movement building with our member organizations.

About People’s Action

People’s Action is a national network of 40 state and local grassroots, power-building organizations united in fighting for justice. Our organization recently released a vision for a national Homes Guarantee that has already prompted major legislation from champions including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. We operate the largest progressive rural organizing project in the country. Prior to endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, we completed a national forum series that The Nation called “the most in-depth, people-powered forum” of the 2020 cycle.”
